Redefining an Experience

A complete redesign of an enterprise-class server, its packaging and collateral with the intent to reduce production costs, and improve customer satisfaction.

Project Goals

  • reduce packaging waste
  • improve customer experience
  • improve product brand and image
  • Before: The Plain Brown Box

Typically, a server arrives at the customer location several days before the arrival of the installation team. With this box design, I wanted to take advantage of that lag time to create excitement and a sense of anticipation for the new server. Here are some pictures of the packaging before the redesign.

    After: Reinforcing the Brand

I developed this box concept to reinforce the corporate brand, and fulfill the requirement to reduce overal packaging production costs while giving the product a more agressive presence.

    Results

    • 50% cost reduction for production
    • increased brand awareness and brand strength
    • simplification of the overal product unpacking and installing process
    • increased customer satisfaction, and reduced installation time

    Design Direction

All parts of the customer experience were addressed to improve satisfaction and channel readiness for the product. This is the Information Kit which houses documentation and CDs for installation and maintenance of the system. I also developed a new deliverable, called the 'welcome kit' (above) which is an elaborate thank you note. It is delivered to the customer weeks before the arrival of a system in order to create drama and excitement, and communicate valuable site planning details.

To support sales while reducing costs, we designed this microsite to educate the sales force, and ultimately customers, about the benefits and unique features of this server.
